 Dr.  Louis J. Ignarro, faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA’s School of Medicine, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 for discovering nitric oxide’s role as a cardiovascular signaling molecule. Dr. Ignarro’s research showed that when the nitric oxide molecule enters a cell it stimulates a process that relaxes and dilates blood vessels which increases the flow of blood.
