Summer Wellness


Summer Wellness
 June 21st is the official first Day of summer. Ancient Taoist masters developed wellness theories for each season utilizing the Five Elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Fire. Fire is the element of summer. For those who wish to use a proactive approach to health I will discuss a few Taoist concepts for summer health maintenance.

The Heart is the Yin organ associated with the Fire element of summer and the Small Intestine is the Yang organ. Mars is the planet, red is the color, love and joy are positive summer emotions and hate and impatience are negative summer emotions.
Heart attacks are more common in the summer and emotion plays a major part. Negative emotions such as anger and impatience can be a greater risk to the heart in the summer.  

Negative emotions also create problems for our small intestine.
The small intestine is the digestive tract between the stomach and cecum. Absorption and digestion are not the only functions of the small intestine; according to Taoist theory the small intestine also helps the body digest unsettled emotions.
During the hot summer months negative emotions of anger, worry, sadness, fear and impatience should be avoided as much as possible. If the small intestine becomes over loaded with negative emotions it can become unhealthy. An unhealthy small intestine can cause hormonal and menstrual disorders for women. It can also develop mucus in the lungs and be the cause of back pain and varicose veins.

We are familiar with how the negative emotions of anger and sadness can create problems for a weak heart but worry and fear can also have a negative effect on the heart. The major problem here is that most are not aware of this build up until it is too late. That is why it is wise to be proactive don’t wait until you feel a problem with your health. When you feel something is wrong it is something that has been building for some time which means in most cases it will take some time to cure naturally. 

Harmful negative emotions are due to a lack of control of the conscience mind. The negative emotions that we carry, emotions that make us sick are usually a story that plays over and over in our mind. The story in most likely due to some past experience or a mental prediction of a future issue that causes fear or worry.

Hearts of Fire


Hearts of fire create love's desire”, that’s the way of the world according to
Earth, Wind and Fire, one of my favorite groups. Hearts of fire had a different meaning to me in 1978 than it has now. We're moving into the summer season - the season of the element of Fire. The five elements, Earth, Wood, Fire, Water and Metal, are used in Taoist healing practices in China and Korea.  Each element is connected to a season, a Yin body organ, and a Yang body organ.

During the Fire element of summer, attention should be placed on bringing balance to the heart (yin) and the small intestine (yang) the fire organs of summer. The negative emotions that create an imbalance in the summer fire organs, such as over excitement of any kind, anger and anxiety, could create health problems. Male/female relationships heat up during the summer months which, if not monitored, can lead to over excitement, anxiety and, in some cases, anger. Remember, you are not your thoughts. Your thoughts are a story in your head.  When you start making your thoughts a reality for yourself and others, you're likely to create an imbalance in the heart.

We tend to eat out more often during the summer months, mainly a lot of junk food. We tend to drink more liquids but usually not enough water. This can create an imbalance in the small intestine. Emotional toxins can also accumulate in the small intestine, usually caused or influenced by an imbalance in the heart organ.  If you're interested in ways to help your small intestine eliminate toxins and detox, I'd suggest investing in a body cleanse format during the summer.

A great self-help book is Chi Nei Tsang: Internal Organs Chi Massage, by Mantak and Maneewan Chia. This book has an easy-to-follow small intestine massage that’s very helpful during summer fire months. I also focus on internal organs when giving Chunsoo, a Taoist Ki Energy treatment.

Have fun during the summer season but try to maintain a balance in the heart and small intestine, the fire organs of summer. If you practice controlling the negative emotions that can affect the fire organs by clearing your head of unrealistic stories that create most negative emotions it will help you in maintaining that balance. A cool head can bring balance to the fire energy of summer.

The Power of Autosuggestion


The power of Autosuggestion

Autosuggestion means making a definite and specific suggestion to yourself according to Joseph Murphy in his popular book “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”.  The average person is not aware of the powers of the subconscious mind and how thinking can create reality.

All too often negative autosuggestions are the major factors in the lack of productivity, health issues and unhappiness. On the other hand positive autosuggestions can address fear and doubt and allow the seemingly impossible to become possible.
Our conscious mind makes use of the five senses and our life history to develop what we believe to be the truth about ourselves and others. The thoughts that we believe to be true are then sent to our subconscious mind that in turn will turn our thoughts into a reality.

Joseph Murphy explains autosuggestion this way: “What thoughts, beliefs, opinions, or dogmas you write, engrave, or impress on your subconscious mind, you shall experience them as the objective manifestation of circumstances, conditions, and events”.

When the brain receives thoughts from the conscious reasoning mind and those thoughts are accepted to be true they are sent to the solar plexus also known as the brain of your abdomen (your subconscious mind) where they become flesh and made to manifest in your life experience both internal and external.

If you believe you cannot achieve a goal you will encounter internal and external barriers that will keep you from achieving that goal. A major factor in negative Autosuggestion is a term called heterosuggestion. Heterosuggestion means suggestions from another person. From an early age many have received negative heterosuggestions about who they are and what they can achieve in life. We are who we think we are and we can achieve what we believe we can achieve.

Positive heterosuggestions can develop positive autosuggestions in individuals statements like black is beautiful in the 60’s was an important heterosuggestion that developed self-pride in large numbers of American from African descent who for years had been subjected with negative media heterosuggestions due to the racism in this country.

This type of negative heterosuggestion created inferiority complexes that continue to exist in the subconscious minds of many of many people of color today. The election of President Barack Obama sent a powerful and positive heterosuggestion to many blacks in America and the world, a fact that often goes unnoticed.  I believe that this is a reason for the current racial backlash we are experiencing in government and parts of the public sector.

It is very important to guard against allowing negative direct or indirect heterosuggestions to influence your thinking. If you do not this method of thinking will always develop into negative autosuggested thoughts of fair and doubt.
Remember you are what you think you are, and you can be what you think you can be, use positive autosuggestion to help you achieve your goals both short and long term. Never allow anyone to use negative heterosuggestions to create fear and doubt that will prevent you from being all that you can be.
